چکیده

We present a new expression of the scattering amplitude, valid for spherical absorbing objects, which leads to an improved version of the eikonal method outside the diffraction region. Limitations of this method are discussed and numerical results are presented and compared successfully with the Mie theory. Key-Words : Light scattering by spheres, eikonal approximation. Estimation of the Stress Intensity Factors for Surface Cracks in Spherical Electrode Particles Subject to Phase Separation

Experiments have frequently shown that phase separation in lithium-ion battery electrodes could lead to the formation of mechanical defects, hence causing capacity fading. The purpose of the present work has been to examine stress intensity factors for pre-existing surface cracks in spherical electrode particles during electrochemical deintercalation cycling using both analytical and numerical ...

Artifcial neural network approach for the prediction of terminal falling velocity of non-spherical particles through Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids

The investigation of the terminal falling velocity of non-spherical particles is currently one of the most promising topics in sedimentation technology due to its great signifcance in many separation processes. In this study, the potential of Artifcial Neural Networks (ANNs) for the prediction of nonspherical particles terminal falling velocity through Newtonian and nonNewtonian (power law) liq...

Apparent optical properties of spherical particles in absorbing medium

An apparent absorption efficiency for spherical particles in absorbing medium is introduced to take into account the non-exponential absorption of the near-field scattered radiation in the absorbing medium. The apparent extinction, which is the summation of the apparent scattering efficiency following previous studies and the apparent absorption efficiency, is the same as the actual extinction....

The scattering of light by a suspension of coated spherical particles: effects of polydispersity on cross sections

The effect of polydispersity on extinction cross sections is studied for a particle system composed of coated, spherical particles. Aden–Kerker equations, governing the light-scattering behaviour of the system, are formulated in a way that makes them more suitable for computation purposes. Differences found between light scattered by non-absorbing and highly absorbing particles show the importa...

The fast marching method in Spherical coordinates: SEG/EAGE salt-dome model

Applying the fast marching method to solve the eikonal equation on the 3-D SEG/EAGE salt-dome model demonstrates two key features of the method, stability and efficiency. Such an application, also reveals some of the accuracy deficiencies of the Cartesian-coordinate implementation of the fast marching method. The accuracy is improved by applying the fast marching method in spherical coordinates...
